Great Louisiana Oil Spill: What Does Obama Know, and When Did He Know It?

The AP reports that in recent filings, British Petroleum argued that oil spills from offshore drilling just like the one that is now destroying the Gulf of Mexico were virtually impossible -- and that even if they did occur, they would cause little damage.

BP suggested in a 2009 exploration plan and environmental impact analysis for the well that an accident leading to a giant crude oil spill -- and serious damage to beaches, fish and mammals -- was unlikely, or virtually impossible...

The plan for the Deepwater Horizon well, filed with the federal Minerals Management Service, said repeatedly that it was "unlikely that an accidental surface or subsurface oil spill would occur from the proposed activities."

And even if it did, it would be no big deal:

The company conceded a spill would impact beaches, wildlife refuges and wilderness areas, but argued that "due to the distance to shore (48 miles) and the response capabilities that would be implemented, no significant adverse impacts are expected."

See, there ya go. Don't you feel better now, all you environmental whackos out there spreading your dystopic nightmare scenarios? And what reason would BP have to downplay the risk of such things? After all, they only just posted a first quarter profit of nearly $6 billion, so it's not like they're making money or anything.

The people shouldn't have to pay a goddamn dime to clean up this mess. Every single dollar should come from BP.

After all, corporate executives got to always worry about following some new “safety” rule, or obey some arbitrary law to the letter; pretty soon they’re exhausted, thus more apt to overlook something important.
